Welcome
Welcome to the Utilities Department website, we are pleased to provide you with water information. I hope you'll find it informative and useful. The water flowing out of your tap has travelled through 274 miles of pipe, and has been treated, disinfected, and tested. Our crews work day and night to inspect and replace this pipe network and continuously treat, test and monitor the quality of the water. We are here to serve you and if you feel that we are not meeting your needs or expectations, please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
Renuka Mohammed
Utilities Director

Sanitary Sewer Line Cleaning January 28th – February 11th, 2026
Please be advised that the City of Pompano Beach will be conducting internal wastewater cleaning of the City’s gravity sewer system at the following locations within the next two weeks, weather permitting. The cleaning of the sanitary sewer is necessary to help prevent system blockages. . YouTube link video details how the process is performed: https://youtu.be/ONwO3N7_Ne8?si=CWOImz8BXhBz1knY
Sewer lines can develop air pressure or a partial vacuum from the cleaning process. Usually, any excess air pressure or vacuum will dissipate through your plumbing vents, but occasionally there are homes with inadequate plumbing vents (no vents, undersized vents or obstructed vents).
In the case of inadequate venting, you may also notice an odor from the toilet floor, sink, tub, or shower drains. To guard against this possibility or rare cases of water discharge, please note the following:
- Close all toilet lids and remove all floor mats in the bathrooms
- Pour 1 gallon of water down all drains or any rarely used sinks/tubs/toilets to ensure that a water barrier is maintained in the traps. This should help to prevent odors. Please open a few windows to allow ventilation.

Smoke Testing / Wastewater Survey February 2nd - February 5th, 2026
The City of Pompano Beach Utilities Department will be conducting smoke testing of the wastewater (sewer) system in your neighborhood, east of Federal Highway, within the Pompano Shores, Isles, and Coral Park subdivisions of Commission District #1 from February 2 through February 5, 2026. This testing helps us identify leaks, faulty connections, and other issues that can allow stormwater or debris to enter the sewer system. Smoke testing is a harmless process in which smoke is blown into the sewer lines. The smoke travels through the pipes and typically exits from roof vents, manholes, or the ground. The process helps City crews identify problem areas that need repair. The following YouTube link video details how the process is performed: https://youtu.be/RLH-Bgb0qLY?si=4uEERQ1yWLnSWyH3
The smoke is non-toxic and odorless, harmless to people, pets, food, and property, and poses no fire hazard.
All public safety agencies will be notified in advance of the system testing.
Smoke should not enter residences/buildings unless there is faulty plumbing or dry or unused plumbing drains or P-traps. If smoke does enter, it may come from sinks, floor drains, toilets, or other plumbing fixtures.
Prior to system testing, residents should ensure that all sinks, tubs, and floor drains have water in their traps, and run water through any drain or fixture that has not been used recently. This helps prevent smoke (and sewer gases) from entering the building.
If You See Smoke Indoors, open windows or doors to ventilate, as the smoke will dissipate quickly.
Property owners or tenants do not need to be present, as City employees will not need to enter your home or business.
City crews in the area are also available to explain where and why smoke entered your building.
All City of Pompano Beach Utility employees carry proper identification.

Common Questions
-
Is the smoke harmful?
No. It is non-toxic, clean, odorless, and safe for humans and pets. -
What should I do if smoke enters my home?
Open windows for ventilation and contact the Utilities Department at (954) 786-5510. The smoke will clear quickly. -
Why is smoke testing being done?
To find leaks, broken pipes, and improper sewer or roof drain connections that may cause system problems. -
What if I’m not home and have pets inside?
The smoke is not harmful to pets. Ventilation helps if someone is home, but it is not required. -
How long will smoke last inside a building?
This depends on the amount of smoke and ventilation, but it usually dissipates quickly. -
Can smoke testing block the sewer system?
No. The smoke is a vapor and floats above the wastewater—it does not block pipes.
