Project Overview:
The City of Pompano Beach is developing an Adaptation Plan to prepare for increasing flooding, sea level rise, stronger storms, and other climate-related impacts. The plan will help the City understand where risks are growing, what assets are most vulnerable, and which actions can best protect the environment, infrastructure, and residents of the City. This effort builds on previous City planning to support decisions that improve Pompano Beach’s resilience today and in the future.
Why This Project Matters:
Climate impacts such as heavy rainfall, tidal flooding, heat, and storm surge are becoming more frequent and severe. These impacts can affect neighborhoods, homes, roadways, drainage systems, and utilities as well as parks, natural areas, and coastal resources. The Adaptation Plan will help the City prioritize actions that reduce risk, enhance safety, and support long-term community well-being and resilience.
What the Adaptation Plan Will Do:
To address the challenges posed by climate change, the Adaptation Plan will:
- Identify climate and flooding risks across the City
- Evaluate how those risks affect critical assets and services
- Explore a range of adaptation strategies and solutions
- Prioritize actions based on effectiveness, feasibility, and overall community benefit
- Provide a clear framework to guide future projects, funding, and policies
How the Community Can Participate:
Public input is an essential part of the process. Residents, businesses, and stakeholders will have opportunities to learn about the project and share local knowledge, concerns, and ideas. Ways to engage in the Adaptation Plan process consist of attending public workshops and meetings, filling out surveys, and following updates shared via the City’s website and communication outlets. To reiterate, community feedback is paramount to the success of the Adaptation Plan, and the table below displays a tentative timeline for engagement opportunities:

Public Outreach Meeting #1
The meeting will address the initial development of the Adaptation Plan. That is, it will review adaptation needs and allow the public to share input on the following: preferred methodologies and existing geographic, social, structural, and environmental conditions for the plan.
February 11, 2026 | 6 PM
Pompano Beach Cultural Center | 50 W Atlantic Blvd
Virtual meeting details for Public Outreach Meeting #1 coming soon.
Public Outreach Meeting #2
The meeting will involve a first draft of the Adaptation Plan which will include the assessment of adaptive capacities and adaptation needs along with the identification of strategies. The public will be able to communicate community-specific input on the needs and strategies as well as offer insight through interactive exercises.
April 2026 | Date, Time & Location TBD
Types of Adaptation Strategies:
Using both data and community feedback, the City will evaluate a broad range of adaptation strategies, including:
- Infrastructure solutions: improvements to roads, utilities, and drainage and stormwater systems
- Nature-based solutions: enhancements to wetlands, shorelines, trees, and green spaces that reduce flood and heat risks
- Policy planning and tools: updates to plans, codes, and standards that support the City’s resilience objectives
- Operational and preparedness actions: emergency planning, maintenance practices, and coordination efforts
- Community and equity considerations: ensuring adaptation actions benefit vulnerable populations and neighborhoods
