McNab Road and Bridge Plans

McNab Road Streetscape and Bridge Replacement Project

Soon to break ground!

McNab Road Plans

Background:

In 2018, voters overwhelmingly supported the "G.O. Pompano!" bond initiative, a bold investment aimed at enhancing infrastructure, improving public safety, and elevating the overall quality of life for the residents of Pompano Beach.

As part of this initiative, 25 high-impact projects were prioritized across three key categories:

  • Public Safety
  • Parks, Recreation & Leisure
  • Bridges and Streetscaping

Among these, McNab Road—a vital east-west corridor featuring a bridge originally constructed in 1959—was identified as a priority project. This corridor plays a critical role in connecting neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and community spaces, making it a central focus for improvements that will better serve our growing community.

Project Scope:

Project Scope: McNab Road Streetscape & Bridge Replacement

The McNab Road Streetscape and Bridge Replacement Project will modernize the corridor between South Cypress Road and Federal Highway, addressing key maintenance issues and upgrading outdated infrastructure to meet current standards.

Driven by extensive community input, the project will address challenges such as a functionally obsolete bridge, narrow sidewalks, aging utilities and mitigate flooding.

Key improvements include:

  • ADA-compliant sidewalks and ramps
  • Road resurfacing, lighting, and drainage upgrades
  • New pedestrian and bike facilities
  • Improved bus stops and shelters
  • Utility infrastructure enhancements
  • Full bridge replacement to boost safety, resiliency, and navigability
  • Landscaping enhancements for a cohesive look and improved walkability

These updates will create a safer, more connected, and more resilient corridor for all users.

Benefits:

Beyond the visible enhancements, this Complete Streets project will unlock a range of transformative, long-term benefits that go far beyond infrastructure.

  • Safer, More Inclusive Streets: Thoughtful design elements such as sidewalks, raised medians, strategically placed bus stops, traffic calming features, and dedicated space for all modes of travel—including people with disabilities—dramatically improve safety for everyone, whether walking, biking, driving, or using transit.
  • Economic Vitality Through Connectivity: A well-balanced transportation network strengthens the local economy by creating seamless connections between homes, schools, parks, transit hubs, workplaces, and shopping centers. These improvements not only support current residents and workers, but also attract new businesses that value mobility options for their employees and customers.
  • McNab Road Proposed Conditions
  • Healthier Lifestyles and Less Pollution: By making walking and biking safer and more appealing, Complete Streets foster healthier lifestyles and expand transportation choices. This shift can lead to reduced traffic congestion and lower pollution levels—creating a cleaner, more vibrant environment for all.

Ultimately, this initiative will help transform the McNab Road and Bridge corridor into a thriving, livable community—one where people of all ages, abilities, and travel preferences feel safe, connected, and welcomed.

Construction Timeline:

Construction is expected to begin in mid-June 2025 and will span approximately 18 months. A key phase of the project—the bridge replacement—is scheduled to start in May 2026, with construction lasting about 16 weeks. During this period, single-lane access will be maintained until the bridge phase begins, at which point a temporary detour will be implemented.

To minimize disruption, the City carefully evaluated several construction methods. One option considered was a partial demolition and reconstruction approach, which would have extended the overall timeline by an additional 12 months. Instead, the selected strategy—a short-term detour during bridge replacement—will significantly expedite the process. This approach also aligns the majority of work with the school summer break, reducing impacts on students, families, and daily traffic patterns.
