Contractor Licensing Changes Now in Effect

The City of Pompano Beach Building Department is informing residents, businesses, and contractors of recent changes to contractor licensing requirements as a result of Florida House Bill 735.

Effective immediately, numerous local contractor license categories previously issued by Broward County are no longer recognized or required for permitting. These categories include, but are not limited to, flooring, tree trimming, sealcoating, striping, sign erection, and paver installation. A complete list of affected categories is available on the Broward County's Code Division Website.

While these licenses are no longer required for permit issuance, permits remain mandatory for all applicable work. Contractors performing work in these categories will now provide an active City Issued Business Tax Receipt (BTR) number on permit applications instead of a contractor license number.

It is important to note:

  • If the work is regulated under the Florida Building Code, a valid State of Florida contractor license is still required.
  • General Liability Insurance and Workers Compensation Insurance (or an approved exemption) must still be provided.
  • A Pompano Beach BTR is required only for businesses based within city limits; otherwise, a BTR from another jurisdiction is acceptable.

These changes align local licensing requirements with state law and ensure continued protection of public safety through permitting and inspection.
