The City of Pompano Beach, in partnership with the Broward Sheriff’s Office, will host a granite monument dedication honoring the late Sgt. Christopher “Chris” Reyka on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. The ceremony will take place at the Walgreens parking lot at 960 South Powerline Road, the site where Sgt. Reyka was tragically killed in the line of duty on August 10, 2007.
Sgt. Reyka, a dedicated law enforcement officer and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was ambushed while conducting a routine license plate check in the early hours of the morning. His selfless service to the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the residents of Pompano Beach left a profound legacy that continues to inspire his fellow officers and the community.
“Sergeant Reyka was more than a respected officer—he was a husband, a father, a mentor, and a true public servant,” said Mayor Rex Hardin. “This new granite monument stands as a permanent and dignified reminder of his sacrifice and our community’s enduring gratitude.”
The original monument, installed shortly after Sgt. Reyka’s death, had weathered over the years. The new granite replacement ensures his memory will be preserved with the honor and respect he deserves. The dedication ceremony will include remarks from City and BSO officials, a moment of silence, and the unveiling of the new monument.
Sgt. Reyka served 18 years with the Broward Sheriff’s Office and was a former officer with the Pompano Beach Police Department. A recipient of multiple awards, he was known for his leadership, compassion, and commitment to public safety. He is survived by his wife, Kim, and four children.
