Vetiver

Vetiver is a grass found in the Florida Everglades. Its roots grow deep, controlling erosion and filtering impurities, taking on the scent of the surrounding soil. The paintings in this show are about Edelman's relationship to the essence of the land — Vetiver's scent runs through them, linking each piece.

The work turns that same root system inward, toward womanhood as its own terrain: refuge, longing, relation. Edelman uses observation and imagination to map the self the way vetiver maps the soil — taking in, protecting, and carrying the weight of where it grew.
