What You Need to Know about the May Meeting

The May 14th Pompano Beach City Commission/CRA Meeting Will Affect the Future for Our City and Your Family!

The Commission has 4 key votes regarding the New Downtown:

We encourage you to ATTEND the Meeting on May 14 at 6:00 PM in the Commission Chambers

Key Vote # 1: How to Finance the New City Hall

The Commission agreed in June 2024 to build a new City Hall in the Downtown and is contractually obligated to do so. This decision was made after careful analysis by renowned national experts determined that a new building will save the City $1 million a year to operate.

  • The current building will cost $18 million to maintain and can’t house all the City employees, leading to government inefficiency and rented space for staff. In addition, the current building is not meeting current storm and flood standards.
  • Building a new efficient, modern City Hall in the Downtown creates an anchor for the development, while also adding an element of enhanced safety to the area.

The Vote on May 14th is about how to finance the building.

  • Voting YES allows the City to use public financing, saving taxpayers over $100 million. A tremendous benefit over private financing.
  • Voting NO, costs us, the taxpayers!

If the Commission does not vote on the public financing option, the City will either be obligated to choose the more expensive funding option or cause a delay in the project.

Key Vote #2: Approval of the CRA Infrastructure Bond

The beautiful renderings with the stunning waterway running through the new Downtown is what the residents loved. But that vision is in jeopardy if the Infrastructure bond is not passed.

  • Voting YES, on the CRA Infrastructure Bond will enable the creation of an efficient and aesthetically pleasing integrated drainage system (waterway) throughout the Downtown area, and will also provide developers with optimal waterfront development pads to build on.
  • Voting NO, eliminates the option of the waterway feature as each developer will have to build their own drainage system on their own property. A loss for the public and the investors.

Key Vote #3: Master Resolution to approve the conceptual design for City Hall and Additional Project Elements

Our new Downtown has the potential to be more than just a development project; it can be a catalyst for economic growth, creating tangible opportunities for our next generation. Through strategic investments in job creation, vocational training, innovation hubs, and technology incubators, we can transform the Downtown into a thriving economic engine that benefits every resident.

  • Voting YES means additional commitments to the community such as residential workforce housing, local contractor participation, vocational training/college resource center, small business incubator, etc.
  • Voting NO—means the community will lose these commitments.

Key Vote #4: An amendment to the Master Development Agreement to incorporate certain Additional Project Elements

The amendment to the Master Development Agreement incorporates an incentive to encourage local business participation, an obligation for the developer to build a vocational tech and college resource center to create enhanced income opportunities for adults and future generations in our community and also includes cultural and heritage components in our Downtown to recognize important pioneers and contributors to the Northwest Community.

The City can easily fund this project and still have surplus (extra) money for general improvements to be used for everyday expenses (road, bridges, parks).

City’s need to invest in their future especially in buildings and infrastructure that belong to the public.
