Public Art Makes Pompano Pop!

Public art reflects the energy of our City, weaving joy, color, and beauty into our daily lives. Far from being confined to the quiet walls of a gallery, creativity here belongs to everyone, redefining our urban landscape and turning everyday spaces into landmarks.

Our City’s artistic momentum owes a great deal to a beloved tradition that began over a decade ago. In 2015, the City of Pompano Beach launched its first large public art installation: Painted Pompano. Celebrating our City’s namesake and a symbol of our local identity, the project kicked off with twelve five-foot-tall foam sculptures cast from a copyrighted mold, coated in durable polyurethane, and individualized by local artists.

The initial launch was such a resounding success that it sparked a second wave in 2018 titled School of Art, which brought twelve more art-history-themed fish to our neighborhoods. While the South Florida climate has meant saying a fond farewell to a few decommissioned pieces over the years, the project continues to evolve through careful collaboration between local talent and the Public Art Committee. The newest addition to this legacy is Laura Saravia’s delightful sculpture, Frankie at the Pool, which was recently installed to bring a splash of whimsy to our aquatics center.

The creative momentum however doesn't stop with our favorite fish. A wave of stunning new installations is enhancing Pompano Beach starting in Old Town with Lead with Love by Cey Adams. This vibrant 52-foot mural on the north wall of Kelly’s Chemicals is part of a county-wide initiative to spread unity and pride. Designed by Adams, a legendary pioneer of the NYC graffiti movement, the mural has become a stunning new addition to the already robust assortment of mural styles in the Old Town Backyard.

Close by, our Downtown streetscape has welcomed an imaginative touch of the extraordinary with Galactic Bloom Part 2 by Tyler FuQua Creations. Located near NE 1st Avenue and Flagler Avenue, these two 12-foot stainless-steel "Space Plants" feature polished, reflective surfaces and an "other-worldly" design that perfectly mirror the forward-moving energy of our community.

Further west, a futuristic glow is rising over "The Pomp" entertainment district. Vivacious by Hunter Brown, a massive 20-foot-tall stainless-steel sculpture near Harrah’s Pompano Beach Casino, is currently in its final installation phase. Its brushed-pattern finish and integrated lighting are designed to create a dynamic, glowing visual experience for everyone entering the area.

Looking just ahead, the anticipation is building for Infinity by Volkan Alkanoglu, which is coming soon to Community Park. This 11-foot-tall fiberglass sculpture features a protective iridescent finish that will shimmer brilliantly under the Florida sun. The community is already gearing up to celebrate its arrival, with a formal dedication scheduled for July 7.

Through these installations, Pompano Beach continues to prove that art belongs to everyone, enriching our spaces and inspiring our souls one neighborhood at a time. Be sure to get out there this weekend and experience these incredible spaces for yourself!
