Prepare for King Tides
King Tides can be a royal mess, but if you’re prepared you can avoid serious issues. For those unfamiliar with the term, King Ties are the highest tides of the year, which occur when the gravitational pull of the sun and moon align, especially during new and full moon phases. While they are a regular and predictable occurrence, their impact makes coastal areas more vulnerable to flooding. Sometimes referred to as "sunny day" flooding, because King Tides can happen even without rain, the excess rising water can overwhelm storm drains and inundate low-lying streets.
The 2025 King Tide season has already begun, and the South Florida Water Management District (District) is providing weekly Tidal Outlooks to keep the public informed. These reports, which began on September 1st and will be released every Monday, include information on factors like wind and ocean currents that can affect tide levels. They also highlight peak periods when tides are expected to approach the National Weather Service's "Minor Flooding" threshold.
To prepare for and stay safe during the King Tide season, it's essential to take precautions:
- Make sure storm drains near your home are clear of debris to allow for proper drainage.
- Keep children and pets safe. Never let children or pets play in or near floodwaters due to the risk of unseen debris and contaminants.
- Do not drive or walk through flooded areas. It's difficult to gauge the depth of the water, and floodwaters can contain hidden hazards like sharp debris or electrical issues. Driving through saltwater can also cause significant damage to your vehicle.
- For boaters, high tides result in lower clearance under bridges. Check tide predictions before leaving the dock. Boaters should also navigate at reduced speeds near seawalls to minimize wake and prevent flooding of waterfront properties.
The District's partnership with the University of Miami has enhanced tide predictions by incorporating dynamic factors like sea level rise and meteorological conditions, providing more accurate forecasts for stakeholders and the public. The projected peak periods for high tides along South Florida's coast in 2025 are:
- October 3-25 (Full and New Moon)
- November 1-10 (Full Moon)
- November 18-20 (New Moon)
- December 2-7 (Full Moon)
