Our City’s Commitment to Social Services

Cassandra Rhett embodies our City's proactive and compassionate approach to addressing the complex social issues that confront communities everywhere. As the City of Pompano Beach’s Housing and Social Service Manager and Community Court Coordinator, her days defy routine.

For Rhett, the morning often begins with the weight of immediate concerns. Overnight updates and urgent cases demand swift attention, setting the tone for a day characterized by responsiveness and action. Throughout her daily encounters, she becomes a lifeline for individuals navigating a myriad of life crises including homelessness, imminent threat of eviction, or distressing social challenges.

"Many clients come to me in distress, needing immediate support and solutions," Rhett explained. Her role transcends mere administration; it demands the ability to prioritize urgent needs, swiftly coordinate available resources, and skillfully de-escalate emotionally charged situations.

Beyond immediate crisis intervention, Cassandra engages in crucial case management, compassionately assessing individual circumstances to develop tailored action plans. Connecting clients with vital resources – be it securing housing options, accessing financial assistance, navigating mental health services, or obtaining legal aid – are all part of her daily efforts.

The impact of this important City position extends far beyond individual interactions as Rhett acts as a crucial bridge, fostering seamless coordination between a network of support systems. Shelters, healthcare providers, legal services, Broward County agencies, and various government entities are just a few of the resources engaged to ensure that clients receive comprehensive and holistic support.

This collaborative spirit underscores the City of Pompano Beach's understanding that tackling complex social issues requires tremendous collaboration in order to deliver impactful services. Facilitating referrals to the Coordinated Entry system for Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) and Rapid Re-Housing (RRH) is a key aspect of Rhett’s role. Moreover, her close collaboration with county agencies ensures that individuals experiencing homelessness have access to shelter stays and hotel assistance programs, providing crucial temporary relief during times of acute need.

Rhett, however, acknowledges that resources are often stretched thin, and she’s often working with people who are facing multiple issues including mental health challenges, substance abuse, legal problems, and unemployment, which complicate their path to stable housing.

“Building trust and providing holistic support is essential but challenging,” she stated.

While many days are reactive, responding to immediate crises, Rhett also emphasizes the critical role of crisis prevention. Developing proactive strategies, such as outreach programs and early intervention case planning, which demonstrates the City's forward-thinking approach to mitigating future challenges and fostering long-term stability within the community.

Her insights into the current realities of life in South Florida paint a concerning picture of escalating vulnerabilities. "I am observing an increasing number of seniors and families experiencing homelessness," she shares. The ever-escalating rents in Florida exacerbates this issue, creating a climate that can quickly lead to displacement and hardship.

Despite the challenges, Cassandra offers a clear pathway for community involvement. "Yes, there are several ways people can make a difference," she affirms. Recognizing the critical shortage of affordable senior housing, she emphasizes the profound impact that increased affordable housing options could have. Beyond this, she encourages volunteering, donations to local organizations, and active advocacy for policies that prioritize affordable housing development. Every contribution, no matter the size, holds the potential to create meaningful change.

For those in need, the City of Pompano Beach is proud to offer a variety of services designed to support and assist those facing difficult times. Our initiative’s goal is to provide a supportive environment here in the City of Pompano Beach where everyone can access the help they require. Ms. Rhett warmly extends her personal invitation to all who may be seeking assistance or simply want to learn more about the services available.
