Monument Lands at Beach
If you’ve strolled along the Pier recently, you may have noticed construction happening across from the Bait Shop. Standing as a testament to the bravery that forged our nation, a prestigious new monument is being erected near the entrance way to the Pompano Beach Fisher Family Pier. This soon-to-be landmark represents a proud partnership between the City of Pompano Beach and the Florida Society Sons of the American Revolution (FLSSAR), bringing a long-overdue chapter of American history to the heart of our community.
The First Amphibious Landing Monument will be a breathtaking sight, rising 20 feet tall and weighing a massive 17,000 pounds. It serves to honor the first amphibious landing of the American Revolution, a pivotal but often overlooked moment in the fight for independence. While this bold military action helped shape the future of the United States and laid the essential foundation for modern amphibious operations, its history has remained largely unsung. Until now, the only known marker for this event was a small plaque located in the Bahamas, but this new installation ensures the story is finally preserved and shared on American soil.
The history behind the stone dates back to early March of 1776. During a daring naval expedition led by Commander Esek Hopkins, the Continental Marines carried out their first-ever assault on foreign soil. These brave individuals landed on the island of New Providence in the Bahamas, successfully targeting Fort Montagu and Fort Nassau. To help visitors connect with this legacy, an informational plaque accompanies the monument, detailing the courage and strategy involved in those early days of the Revolutionary War.
Selecting the perfect home for such a significant memorial was a meticulous process. After searching for a meaningful southeastern location, the Sons of the American Revolution selected Pompano Beach. They cited the Fisher Family Pier and the vibrant new Fishing Village area as the ideal setting for both residents and visitors to reflect on our national heritage. City leaders embraced the project early on, providing unanimous approval to ensure this vision became a reality within the city’s newly redeveloped coastal hub.
