Lace Up for a Cause: The Inaugural Heroes Run
It’s time to hit the pavement for a powerful cause! The community is coming together to proudly support our courageous First Responders with the inaugural Heroes Run taking place on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 7:00 a.m. at the iconic Fisher Family Pier. And, you don't need to be a track star to participate! Choose your challenge with flexible 10K, 5K, and 1-mile options available.
Organized by the nonprofit South Florida First Responders Foundation, this run has a powerful core mission. All proceeds are channeled into raising essential funds for specialized mental health programs and resources dedicated exclusively to first responders and their families. The event serves dual duty as both a sincere tribute to their bravery and a vital call to action for their support.
The Heroes Run was founded in memory of fallen heroes, including Lifeguard Lt. Piotr Zatorsky, Lifeguard Richard Loop, and Lifeguard Jose Antonio Landrua. The race highlights the often-unseen struggles our heroes face, drawing necessary attention to the lasting toll of stress and trauma that doesn’t magically end when their shift does.
"Every day, our local firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and ocean rescue teams carry the weight of protecting our community," said Tom O’Neill, president and co-founder of the Foundation. "Through the Heroes Run, we hope to show our profound appreciation while significantly helping to expand access to critical mental health and wellness resources for those who serve."
All proceeds will directly support the following organizations:
- Pompano Beach Fire Rescue Benevolent Association
– Assists firefighters and their families
- Pompano Beach Ocean Rescue Benevolent Association – Supports lifeguards and their families
- The Sheriffs Foundation of Broward County– Supports deputies and their families
- Stomping Out the Stigma – Provides free, confidential counseling for first responders
- First Responders Foundation – Florida Chapter
– Places emotional support dogs with first responders in need
Registration is open at www.heroesrunpompano.com. Participants may run, walk, or dedicate their race in memory of a fallen hero through the Celebrating Our Fallen Heroes program. Community members, families, and businesses are encouraged to join, sponsor, or volunteer to show their support.
