Join the Juneteenth Celebrations

Juneteenth, a federally recognized holiday, marks a powerful moment in American history: June 19, 1865, was the day the news of freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in Texas. It's a day of profound significance, recognizing the end of slavery and the ongoing journey toward equality. While the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, Juneteenth signifies the true realization of that promise for all. Today, it stands as a vibrant symbol and is celebrated throughout the country.

In Pompano Beach, we have some wonderful opportunities to honor this important day, with a highlight being the fantastic Blues and Sweet Potato Pie Festival at Apollo Park!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 14th, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p’m’ at Apollo Park! This cherished annual event, now in its 24th year, is a joyful celebration of African-American heritage that's free for everyone. Get ready to groove to incredible live music, from soulful jazz to energetic Afrobeat, and be mesmerized by captivating dance performances. And yes, there will be delicious sweet potato pie!

It's a family-friendly affair with fun historical games for the kids, opportunities to get creative with face painting and crafts, and a chance to learn more about the history of Juneteenth through engaging displays. Plus, this vibrant festival also kicks off the Northwest Branch Library's exciting Summer Learning Program.
